Martin Jørgensen home to Århus
Aging winger to reportedly return to his hometown where he spent his first four years of professional football
It’s apparently back where he started for national team winger Martin Jørgensen, who is leaving Fiorentina and heading back to Danish Super League club AGF, where he started his professional career.
According to Århus Stiftstidende newspaper, the 34-year-old Jørgensen has agreed to a one-year contract with his original club, the terms of which have not yet been disclosed. The deal reportedly took place yesterday – the last day of the transfer window for European footballers.
The deal has not yet been confirmed by Fiorentina management, however, who have had their hands full in recent days dealing with Romanian forward Adrian Mutu, who tested positive a second time for the use of illegal substances.
But sources say the club’s approval for Jørgensen’s departure is likely a mere formality.
‘I’d definitely like to return to AGF, assuming management down here lets me,’ Jørgensen had told Sporten.dk on Sunday.
Jørgensen, who is currently team captain at Fiorentina, has been getting very little playing time of late with the club. His spot in the midfield has been taken by the recent additions of Marco Marchionni from Juventus and young Serbian talent Adem Ljajić.
From 1994-97, Jørgensen played 82 games for AGF, scoring 13 times. He is best known, however, for his attacking and ability to set up goals.
The native Århusian has played 93 international matches for Denmark’s national team and scored 13 goals.
