Denmark face Norway and Portugal for Euros
Euro 2012 football qualification draws pits Denmark against Portugal, Norway, Cyprus and Iceland
Cristiano Ronaldo and Co. will get a chance to avenge their surprisingly disappointing World Cup qualifying results against Denmark in the qualifiers for the 2012 European Championship.
The draw for Euro 2012 was made on Sunday and as well as Portugal, the Danes will face off against Cyprus, Iceland and Norway in Group H.
National coach Morten Olsen said he was pleased with the drawing that pits them against their northern neighbours, but doesn’t concede it will be a walkover.
‘It’s a group where we have an okay chance of moving on from,’ Olsen told TV2 News. ‘We know that Norway and Sweden have always been some difficult nations to play against. Geographically it’s fine as we don’t have such a distance as if we had to go to say Kazakhstan.’
Denmark faced Sweden and Portugal in last year’s World Cup qualifiers, knocking Sweden out and finished with a draw and win over Portugal.
Norway’s head coach Nils Johan Semb is also pleased with the draw and sees his own squad, Portugal and Denmark fighting it out for the top two spots in the group.
Each group winner qualifies directly as do the runners-up with the best record against the top five sides. The remaining second place finishers will face each other in play offs for the remaining qualification spots.
