Unique Greenland ice as World Heritage
Ilulissat Icefjord one the world´s natural wonders is now a World Heritage
Ilulissat Icefjord is the first site in Greenland and one of the first in the Arctic to be included in the UNESCO World Heritage List among numerous other world famous localities. It will secure that people around the world also in the future will be able to enjoy the unique ice and nature of the icefjord – our common heritage.
Ilulissat Icefjord is feed by ice from one of the world´s fastest glaciers. It possesses great beauty created by the Inland Ice, the glaciers and the majestic icebergs. The area’s abundant animal life has for thousands of years made it possible for people to inhabit this otherwise inhospitable environment. The icefjord is of international importance to the geosciences and numerous expeditions have for more than 250 years explored the area.
The town of Ilulissat is the location, where the Greenland Dialogue was started in 2005, and where politicians with their own eyes could see the climate impact on the large Greenland ice sheet.
