Denmark and Danish business and industry have a fantastic story to tell. In October 1973 the Danes awoke to the cold and unstable realities of the international oil crisis. At that time the country was 98 per cent dependent on imported oil. Since then a complete turnaround in production and consumption of energy has positioned Denmark as a front runner in cleantech technologies and energy efficiency.
What started out as a harsh diet of high energy taxes and regulatory framework has developed into a multibillion dollar industry with tens of thousands of jobs. In the same period Denmark has managed to undergo an economic growth of almost 80 percent in real terms without increasing total energy consumption. COP15 is thus an excellent opportunity for Denmark to show efficient clean energy and ready-to-use technologies.
Today Denmark is reaping the benefits of the transition into a green economy. The country can showcase power plants with the highest efficiency rate in the world, the highest percentage of wind energy integrated in the power grid, some of the world’s most energy efficient buildings using heat pumps, thermostats and insulation, extended knowledge and use of biomass and bio energy and an intelligent, well-developed central heating system.
Combined with strong government investments in new green technologies and the use of taxes as an incentive to minimize energy consumption both in businesses and private households, Denmark has become independent of imported energy and year by year increased its export of cleantech technologies and know-how.
In Denmark, carbon reducing technologies and climate and energy friendly solutions are already in place and have a proven track record – and new technologies and results are emerging every day from research institutions and companies working in this field. Many of these companies in the climate and energy-area can be found on EnergyMap.dk - an easy-to-use web portal guide to solutions for combating climate change. Companies, decision makers and journalists can find all they need to know about the latest technologies, projects, solutions, cases, events, statistics and much more.
Denmark is living proof that even as a small country you can be a frontrunner within green technology and lead the way in solving some of the world’s most pressing challenges.
