Global climate change poses significant technological challenges. In the worldwide search for new solutions, climate issues can be a catalyst for new ways of thinking ingreener and cleaner technologies. In Danish industry the words “green” and “clean” have already become an essential part of the technological vocabulary.
What does it take to secure a greener and cleaner future?
From a technological viewpoint, providing solutions to the global challenges of climate change involves making existing technologies greener and cleaner as well as developing new climate-friendly technologies. But the foundation for securing a green future is a strong emphasis on research and education. Only by grooming a generation of green-savvy scientists and educating the public about renewable energy, sustainability and climate-friendly behaviour will Denmark remain a frontrunner in the battle against climate change.
How do we educate a new climate generation?
The Danish Ministry of Education has launched a variety of climate initiatives designed to equip future generations with broad knowledge of the climate issue’s many perspectives. One example is Teacherscop15.dk, an international website on climate issues designed to help teachers inspire and learn from each other, share resources and help one another in educating a new climate generation.
How do we fuel the development of green and clean technology?
In Denmark, climate-friendly technological developments have had a significant impact on our way of living. Decades ago, Denmark recognised the need to protect the environment and to promote and safeguard sustainable development. As a result, the country has accumulated in-depth experience in sustainable generation of energy, energy efficiency, district heating, waste water treatment and waste management. During the 1970s Denmark pioneered commercial development of wind power and today almost half the world’s wind turbines are produced by Danish manufacturers. In fact, Danish exports of energy technology and equipment have more than tripled in the last decade, outperforming most other Danish export areas. Danish expertise in wind energy is second to none, and Danish companies are still the market leaders in wind power technology. According to the Danish Wind Industry Association, it accounted for 7.2% of the total Danish exports in 2008.
How do we share local know-how, globally?
The outcome of Denmark’s focus on green research and 30 years of energy technology development is highlighted on the web portal, EnergyMap.dk. This easy-to-use resource for tackling climate change features unique cleantech solutions from Danish companies and research institutions, and embodies the very best of what is called Danish tech. With Energymap.dk Denmark hopes to make the words “green” and “clean” a part of the vocabulary of industries all over the world.

Danish climate research – great say in a small way

Teacherscop15.dk is an international teachers’ website on climate issues. The website is part of the Ministry of Education’s project entitled Teaching Climate Issues 2009. The purpose of the project is to strengthen interest in teaching climate issues.
Pioneering wind power
Denmark pioneered commercial development of wind power during the 1970s and today almost half the world’s wind turbines are produced by Danish manufacturers. Furthermore, Denmark was among the first in the world to establish offshore wind farms. Existing offshore capacity is planned to be doubled by 2010/2011– bringing it up to 825 MW.
Danish cleantech solutions – driving exports and attracting foreign investment
Denmark is capable of providing a wide range of solutions and technologies that the world needs in order to address climate change. Following the oil crisis in 1973, Denmark has converted production processes and facilities from solely fossil fuel based to more diverse sources of energy. Simultaneously, energy efficiency measures have been developed in order to cut down energy consumption and CO2 emissions. Add to this combined heat and power plants, district heating, waste and waste water management. This and the fact that Danish environmental policy is integrated into all major policy sector objectives puts Denmark among the world leaders in developing and commercializing cleantech technologies.

Green Lighthouse
Green Lighthouse is Denmark's first CO2-neutral public building. The special feature of the building is its combination of solar energy, heat pumps and district heating.
Climate Research Center in Greenland
Denmark has established a research center in Greenland's capital Nuuk. The Greenland Climate Research Centre is concerned with the expected impacts of climate change on Arctic marine, limnic and terrestrial environments and on Greenlandic society – including adaptation and prevention strategies.
Climate Consortium Denmark
Climate Consortium Denmark is a public private-partnership between the Danish state and five of Denmark’s leading business organizations representing some 85 per cent of Danish business and industry.

Public Transport: a Climate-Friendly Solution for UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen
Free shuttle buses will drive delegates around Copenhagen during COP15. Buses will run from the conference venue to the city centre every five to ten minutes and to Copenhagen Airport slightly less frequently, from 7 am to 11 pm, from December 6 to December 19. All buses live up to the EU standard Enhanced Environmentally Friendly Vehicle. Half of them are 'light weight buses', which are 20% more fuel-efficient than standard buses.

Green Lighthouse is Denmark's first CO2-Neutral
Public Building
The VELUX Group is presenting the first public CO2-neutral building in Denmark, Green Lighthouse. It is a new faculty building to Copenhagen University and saves up to 75 % energy through its unique design. As part of VELUX Model Home 2020 concept Green Lighthouse is the second out of six CO2-neutral houses in five countries in Europe. The experiments lead the way for the next generation of climate friendly buildings.

50% of Commuting Traffic in Copenhagen to Be by Bike by 2015
Copenhagen plans to lower its CO2 emissions by 80,000 tons by 2015 and a major part of this strategy involves promoting cycling so that 50% of commuting traffic in Copenhagen is done by bike by 2015. The city already has 350 km of bicycle trails and encourages cycling. 40 km of new trails have been created with a further 70 km under development. The green bicycle tracks separate bicycles from car traffic and make it safer and easier for cyclists to get around.
