The challenges may be global, but the solutions must be found locally
The Danish Ministry of Climate and Energy has designated six Danish municipalities as EcoCities: Skive, Kolding, Copenhagen, Århus, Herning and Albertslund. These EcoCities are forerunners in the field of climate and energy, where they have made special efforts to save energy and reduce CO2 emissions. The goal in granting them this title is to give impetus to local climate and energy initiatives at Danish and foreign municipal level.
The challenges faced in the climate and energy field are global. Every country discharges CO2 emissions and every country risks being impacted by the consequences. Therefore efforts to counter this must be made at international level, although this in itself is not enough. To bring about lasting climate and energy improvements, action is also required at local level. And this can be encouraged through the EcoCities initiative.
EcoCities serve as model examples
EcoCities are designated by the Danish Ministry of Climate and Energy as model examples of the way in which municipalities can work at local level to counter the climate and energy challenges we face, including the production and consumption of sustainable forms of energy and supply reliability.
At the same time, the designated EcoCities commit themselves to implementing a range of innovative and ambitious initiatives designed to meet future requirements and which distinguish themselves at national and international level.
The goal is to inspire other municipalities
The project is intended to provide further impetus for climate and energy efforts at local level, as well as serving as inspiration for new initiatives. This will be achieved by sharing the know-how and experience acquired by the EcoCities and other energy-aware Danish municipalities.
By highlighting these good examples - on this website and elsewhere – the hope is that they will inspire other municipalities to implement similar initiatives, so that at local level we in Denmark can play our part in climate and energy efficient developments.
