COP15 Climate Scholarship
Drop the pointless merchandise and the fine goody bags for conference participants, and give some young people an unforgettable stay in Denmark instead. This is the Danish Government's idea behind setting up climate scholarships. 11 young students from all over the world have received the COP15 climate scholarships, which will pay for accommodation and two years' climate studies at six Danish universities.
Most students come from developing countries, which are facing quite particular challenges in connection with the climate changes. At the Danish universities they will get new knowledge, experiencing at close quarters the green way of thinking existing in many places in Danish society.
One example is COP15 climate student Raphael Kubeba Tabase from Ghana who has met with Denmark's bicycle culture:
"I just bought myself a new bike and it's wonderful riding about 10 km totally to and from school. I think the Danish riding spirit has caught up with me and it is great. I was convinced to use this means of transport by a senior Dane I met in trying to buy a bus card in a shop a week ago. He said "why don't you buy a bike, it's cheaper, though I'm old I ride about 15 km a day". It's really great enjoying the company of other bikers through the streets of Aarhus and campus..."
Young ambitious people are far better climate ambassadors than gifts for the conference participants. This is why the Danish Government has chosen this unconventional gift policy.
