Fil Lake (Filsø), which was once the second largest lake in the country after Arresø, can now be reestablished following years of negotiations. The owners of the Fiil-Sø A/S estate in Varde, Jutland have agreed to abandon their pig farm and potato fields and sell the land to one of the country’s largest owners of natural areas, Aage V Jensen Nature Fund, writes Politiken newspaper.
The Nature Fund intends to recreate the lake, a move which will be one of the most significant changes to the Danish map for decades. Environmental organisations are highly supportive of the move, which will create a whole landscape close to the sea around the reestablished lake, with heath land and unique animal wildlife.
The Danish Nature Fund (DN) has, since 1941, been calling the transformation of Filsø from lake to farmland the most significant nature destruction in Denmark. The area was once internationally acclaimed, as it contained unique bird life. Once reestablished, the area is expected to draw many tourists, walkers and bikers, who will once again be able to enjoy nature and birdlife on the west coast of Jutland.
