Roughly 300 people lost their lives in traffic accidents this year – a considerable drop from 2008, according to preliminary figures from the Council for Traffic Safety.
Last year, 406 people were killed on the nation’s roads and motorways, and this year’s figure represents a drop of about 25 percent.
‘Every death is one too many, of course, but the decrease is really good news,’ Anders Rosbo, head of the council, told public broadcaster DR.
‘We’re now back to the levels of 2006, which was a reasonably good year for traffic safety. But continuing the positive trend requires that we put more time into developing further initiatives to reduce fatalities and injuries as much as possible,’ said Rosbo.
The council indicated that stricter rules for scooters and an increased focus on right turn accidents helped to reduce the number of traffic deaths this year.
