Influenza A vaccines start
First wave of Influenza A H1N1 vaccines offered to people in at-risk categories, including pregnant women
The first Influenza A H1N1 vaccinations took place yesterday.
The National Board of Health estimates that up to 700,000 people are at risk of being infected. Those under 65 years old and considered at risk have been advised to contact their doctor directly to get the vaccine.
Board of Health spokeswoman Else Smith said those at risk included people with chronic illnesses, especially those of the respiratory tract, overweight and diabetic people.
Healthy pregnant women who are at least three months into their pregnancy are also advised to seek the vaccine.
Smith said that pregnancy affected the immune system, which increased pregnant women’s risk of infection.
The first of the 1.55 million doses were administered yesterday with those in the at-risk groups over the age of 65 beginning vaccinations from December onwards.
