Fredericia to use biogas from wastewater in natural gas grid
Fredericia and DONG Energy enter agreement that will utilise and upgrade biogas from wastewater, thereby providing enough gas to cover the needs of around 500 households
Denmark's leading energy concern DONG Energy has signed an agreement with a wastewater treatment plant in Fredericia that will result in biogas (a process by-product) from the plant being upgraded and fed into the natural gas network, reports Dknyt.
The output from the plant will cover the gas consumption needs of around 500 households, and will save the environment 2,000 tons of CO2 annually advises Fredericia municipality.
This will be the first time that biogas will be added to Denmark's natural gas supply network. The agreement is part of a climate partnership agreement that DONG Energy and Frederica entered in August 2008.
The wastewater treatment plant is owned by Fredericia municipality, which has produced a significant amount of biogas at its central treatment plant from waste waster sludge. Some of the biogas is already being used for electricity and fuel for a biological process, but with the new agreement the gas will be better utilised and production will be increased through process optimisations.
The parties expect the first upgraded biogas will be fed into the grid by the end of this year.
