Forestry programs get Danish boost
More than a hundred million kroner paid out in first instalment of Danish forestry support funds
Ahead of the UN Climate Change Conference in December, the Danish government is pumping some 105 million kroner into protecting at-risk tropical rainforests around the world.
Development Cooperation Minister Ulla Tørnæs said the funds were sources from this year’s budget and would be administered by the World Bank’s Climate Investment Funds and the UN’s REDD deforestation programme.
The money will be used to inform residents in forested areas of the economic advantages of getting an international forestry deal in place at COP15 to prevent deforestation.
Australia, Norway and the UK have already pledged $204 million to the World Bank’s Forest Investment Program, and part of the latest donation is the first instalment of Denmark’s 130 million kroner promised to the programme.
