Health Insurance & Social Security
The last couple of years, public health has been in focus in Denmark, and there is a tendency towards increasing the efforts in the area of prevention. For instance, the authorities have implemented prevention programmes, which by means of campaigns, arrangements and other measures are to make the Danes live healthier lives and thus prevent the so-called welfare diseases. Likewise, several patients’ organisations are active in the work of prevention.
Free emergency hospital treatment
Any person, who lives in Denmark, is entitled to free emergency hospital treatment.
The Nordic countries and the UK
From these regions people are entitled to the same health services as the Danish citizens, if they need acute medical treatment. More specifically, the Nordic students are covered for up to six months by the Danish Health Security.
EU and EEA countries
Students from these regions, including Liechtenstein, are also entitled to the same health services as the Danish residents, if they need acute medical treatment. However, if the student plans to stay for more than three months, the student will have to bring his/her national European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). Upon arrival the student will have to apply for the Danish Health Insurance card.
Other countries
People from other countries are not entitled to any free medical care, except the emergency hospital treatment, mentioned above, and they are therefore urged to obtain a private health insurance.
