6 January - Epiphany
Epiphany was abolished as an official church festival in 1770. However, the previous evening, Twelfth Night, 5 January, is celebrated in some homes by burning a special Twelfth Night candle with three wicks which burn themselves out with a pop. When the candles thus go out, it symbolises the end of Christmas. A very few locations in Denmark still celebrate the evening with a procession where people in fancy dress go from house to house.
14 FEBRUARY - VALENTINE'S DAY
In the early 1990s, the Danes began to celebrate Valentine’s Day as the great day of love, inspired by the American custom.
