Great Danes
Denmark does not take up much space on a map of the world, and the country has only 5 million inhabitants. But in spite of the limited size, several Danes have made a name for themselves world-wide. These ‘Great Danes’ include writers, physicists, philosophers, athletes, designers, architects, movie directors, politicians, kings etc. Some are better known outside Denmark than others.
Who are these Great Danes?
Many people know the fairy tale about the ugly duckling that grew into a beautiful swan. This is just one of Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tales, many of which are loved by children and adults alike all over the world.
The best known Danish physicist is probably Niels Bohr, who was awarded the Nobel Prize for physics in 1922. Within the world of philosophy, Søren Kierkegaard has become known as the godfather of existentialism.
The Laudrup brothers and Peter Schmeichel are among the best known Danish football players.
Danish design, as exemplified by for instance Arne Jacobsen, who would have turned 100 in 2002, has also gained a lot of world-wide respect and approval. Danish architects also highly esteemed everywhere. Best known is probably Jørn Utzon – the man who designed the Sydney opera house.
Cutting Edge Filmmakers
Denmark has some strong and noteworthy movie traditions. From the 1980s onwards, directors like Lars von Trier and Gabriel Axel have been synonymous with cutting edge filmmaking. They have won a number of international prizes for movies that challenge and explore the traditional boundaries of film production and genre classifications.
