Danish Microbreweries
Denmark has always been a nation of beer drinkers, ever since the Viking age when every family brewed its own beer. For many centuries, each parish also had its own brewery and until 30 years ago, many towns had their own local brewing house.
But with the arrival of globalisation in the 1980’s, many of these small breweries lost their independence. Most became fused into two large brewery groups, Carlsberg and Royal Unibrew, which by the1990’s had more than 90% of the market.
That was until local Danish beer enthusiasts themselves started brewing again. The creation of the Danish Beer Enthusiasts Association in 1998, proved to be a turning point. They helped promote the return of microbreweries; today it is estimated there are over 200 microbreweries, with dozens of styles and hundreds of craft beers currently being brewed in Denmark.
With microbreweries now firmly back in fashion, even Carlsberg, Denmark’s largest brewery, has jumped on the bandwagon and established its own microbrewery, Husbryggeriet Jacobsen.
And this year, local microbrewery Amager Bryghus was awarded the prize of best brewery in Denmark and one of the best breweries in the world by prestigious website
