Profile Sheets: Green Denmark
Decades ago, Denmark recognized the need to protect the environment and to promote and safeguard sustainable development. The fundamental idea of sustainable development is to create the best possible conditions for human beings and the environment, both now and in the future.
The development of Danish society exemplifies how sustainable development can go hand in hand with increasing consumption and economic growth. In the last 25 years, the Danish economy has grown by 70% while energy consumption has remained largely unchanged and CO2 emissions have continuously declined.
Since the mid seventies successive Danish governments have prioritized more efficient energy exploitation, while at the same time enacting tough legislation on environmental protection. This has benefited both the environment and the energy balance, and has strengthened the Danish corporate sector. It has forced Danish companies to think innovatively and dynamically.
This in turn has given the country a useful lead in tackling issues like sustainable generation of energy, energy efficiency, district heating, waste water treatment and waste management. Today, green technology is one of Denmark’s biggest exports. The country has well-established programs of research and numerous companies with expertise and production capability in the field of sustainable technologies. Denmark is thus well prepared for meeting the challenges of climate change, and welcomes opportunities for partnership in the fight against global warming.
WHERE DOES YOUR ENERGY COME FROM?
Energy is all around us: In the wind and waves, in solar rays, in agricultural by-products.
WHAT'S WASTE WORTH TO YOU?
Each year, Denmark’s 5.4 million citizens generate 14 million tons of waste.
WHAT MAKES TECHNOLOGY ECO-EFFICIENT?
Collaboration and partnerships between companies, universities, research and institutions is crucial to the development.
WILL COPENHAGEN STILL BE WONDERFUL IN 2015?
Agenda 21, launched at the 1992 UN conference in Rio, is a programme to promote sustainable development globally and locally.
IS YOUR ENVIRONMENT HEALTHY?
The environment affects our health in both positive and negative ways. Pollution, chemicals, noise and pathogens can do us harm.
HOW STABLE IS YOUR ENERGY SUPPLY?
Energy consumption is rising around the world, much of it based on oil from politically unstable regions.
HOW CAN WE FIGHT GLOBAL WARMING LOCALLY?
The fight against global warming involves us all, from multinational organisations and governments to local communities and individuals.
HOW DO WE FUEL SUSTAINABLE GROWTH?
It used to be commonly held that economic growth was inescapably linked to higher energy consumption.
IS CLEAN WATER AN ISSUE?
Water is a basic necessity of life which we use in many ways: for drinking, bathing, washing, industrial processes, irrigation and recreation.
ENERGY EFFICIENCY - DO YOU REALIZE THE POTENTIAL?
Energy use by households usually accounts for not only a large share of a country’s total energy consumption, but often also a significant share of energy wasted.
