The use of language technologies is still fairly limited, but it will gradually become more and more prevalent in our everyday life. New applications of language technology already make it possible to access a computer in situations where you are prevented from using your hands.
Language technology is one of the relatively rare cases where the humanities and the technical sciences work closely, and directly, together. A collaboration which is a simple necessity in the development of the technology. The humanities possess a unique knowledge about language, and the ways humans use language.
Language technology for flexible search engines
The more linguistically sophisticated a search engine is, the more effectively it will be able to find relevant information.
The Danish linguist Bolette Sandford Pedersen from Centre for Language Technology at University of Copenhagen is trying to tease out the linguistic components that will make the search engines and other information navigating tools of tomorrow more technologically advanced and flexible.
