Tracing Your Danish Ancestors
Because of the rather modest size of their country, Danes have always been quite dependent on the outside world. This has entailed a lot of interaction with other countries, but the emigration in the second half of the 19th century is unique in Danish history.
The dream of America
In that period, more than 250.000 Danes emigrated. This number is quite astounding when you take into consideration that the total population, according to the 1901 census, was 2.5 million. Most emigrants wanted to escape poverty and appalling conditions, and most journeyed to the USA.
